RUBY WINE ran a great race last night to finish third in the Listed Virginia Stakes at Yarmouth. It was a good quality field and they broke the track record so it was a very good performance for her first run of the season. She definitely needed the run and had a good blow afterwards but stayed on well at the end to get third prize. This will hopefully put her spot on for the Chalice Stakes at Newbury on August 6th. This is a listed contest for fillies only over 12 furlongs. It is an ideal race for her especially as she has won at Newbury before. The 12 furlongs should suit her better than the shorter trip of 10 furlongs yesterday and James Eustace feels that she could even get further this year. RUBY WINE also holds an entry in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks and that could be her next target after Newbury. To get placed in a group 1 would really enhance her paddock value so it is well worth a try. ARIODANTE also ran a gallant race in defeat last night at Yarmouth. He tried to make all but couldn’t quite hold on and eventually finished fourth beaten less than 3 lengths. He is running well and hopefully his winning turn will come before too long.
POCHARD is making her second appearance on the track at Pontefract again on Friday evening. It is another 10 furlong maiden but this time open to colts and geldings too so it may be a tougher contest than last time. James Eustace is hoping that the thunderstorms that are forecast do appear as he feels the filly would appreciate some cut in the ground. She has definitely improved from her first run when she was very green but may still need another run before she fully understands what racing is all about.
